From Our Pastor.....

Okay, who prayed for patience? That’s something I religiously don’t do. I’ve seen what’s happened to people who do. The way we learn to do most things is by practicing – and patience is not something I enjoy practicing!

This virus that has isolated us, overwhelmed our healthcare system, killed at least 649,000 people worldwide with more than 147,000 of them in our own country as of Monday morning, and has sent our economy into a frenzy of…what???, appears to be nowhere near going away.

It has also caused us to keep our sanctuary doors closed for a long time. We’ve all grown weary of that. I miss you, and I know that you miss being together. For some of you it’s about the fellowship, for others the sacred feeling of the sanctuary building, and for some it’s about communal worship

To address all of these feelings, we’re offering a brief gathering right outside of the main doors to our sanctuary at 9:00 AM on Wednesday, July 29. We will pray, hear holy writ read, make our offering to God, and celebrate holy communion as we gather at Christ’s table. I pray that it will be a holy moment in which we will all feel God’s presence among us in a very special way, as well as our being together as one body.

We will observe best safety practices. In accordance with our governor’s executive order and the advice of medical experts, masks and social distancing will be required. Hand sanitizer will be available, and the communion elements will be in prepackaged individual portions that you will pick up from the communion table. We want you to feel as safe as possible, and we want to do everything we can to prevent the spread of this dreadful virus.

So that we can adequately prepare for this gathering, please email Pastor Sheree at pastor@spumctx.org no later than noon Tuesday, July 28, if you plan to attend. I hope to see you there!

Stay safe and be well,

Pastor Sheree

New Study – Overcoming Anxiety During COVID-19
by Jonathan Pokluda

Begins week of August 3rd

In this four-part series, Jonathan Pokluda speaks words of comfort and wisdom, to help Christians navigate the areas of life COVID-19 is affecting. During this series you'll be encouraged in how to overcome anxiety in these troubling days and explore ways you can remain faithful to God and to others.

This study is being offered free by RightNow Media and to gain access to the video and study guide, you must go to https://www.rightnowmedia.org/ and set up a profile which includes a password.  You will have to complete this profile each time you log-in to the site.

Many studies are available on this website, but this study, Overcoming Anxiety, is the study we would suggest you participate in right now.  It can be found in the first row of studies once you log-in.  Each session includes a study guide that can be printed and each guide gives a Bible passage to explore and questions to reflect on.

Please see below for the session titles:

Session 1: Anxiety About the Uncontrollable
Session 2: Anxiety About the Economy
Session 3: Anxiety About Isolation
Session 4: Anxiety When the Church Can’t Meet

We hope many of you will participate in this study and be encouraged by it!
Contact Sue in the church office if you have any questions or need assistance.

Blessing of the Backpacks

On Sunday, August 9, we will have a special time of blessing over the backpacks (and the children and youth) during the worship service.  While we may not be meeting in person, we encourage all children and youth to join us online, along with your backpacks!

In addition, during the week of August 10th, blessing tags will be delivered to the children and youth in the church, as well as to the Doyle Center for distribution to the children and youth in the surrounding neighborhood.

We hope everyone will join us on this special Sunday!

“Care Packages” for Tally Elementary Teachers, Faculty, & Staff

The Education Team has “adopted” Tally Elementary for the 2020-2021 school year with the emphasis on providing encouragement and support to the teachers, faculty, and staff throughout the year.  As you know, this next school year will present many challenges for the teachers, faculty and staff and so we are excited about this opportunity to come alongside them and provide prayer and support!

The first outreach project will be providing “care packages”.  We will put together 50 care packages and each package will include a set of encouragement cards, a journal, energy bars, special treats, and a few classroom teacher supplies.

We would also like to include special notes of encouragement from members of the congregation in the packages.  So, if you would like to write a note or two, please mail to the church office or place in the BOX located outside the main office door.

It will cost approximately $10 to fill each care package.  If you would like to make a MONETARY DONATION to help support this outreach project, please send a check to St. Paul’s UMC by Friday, August 7thPlease MEMO the check “care packages.”

We are excited about this outreach opportunity and are grateful that we can work together as a church family to make it happen!

Thank you, St. Paul’s!  Together we can make a difference!

Co-Chairs: Ruth Strackbein and Lois Lister

AUGUST ALTAR RAIL MISSION EMPHASIS

The mission emphasis for the month of August is the Indigenous Women's Gardening and Leadership Project of Guatemala. This project is sponsored by UMCOR and it's purpose is train Indigenous Mayan Women in traditional methods of vegetable gardening, food production and leadership. The Mayan culture has been somewhat marginalized in Guatemala and this program enables these folks to keep their lands, restore good ecological balance to their farms and helps to alleviate extreme poverty. Another of it's goals is to promote women's leadership in Guatemala. Giving to this project also fulfills our international requirement for 5 Star Church qualification.

As always, your generosity is greatly appreciated.

Blessings,
Dave

Are you in need of a facemask?

We understand that sometimes you must get out to go to a doctor's appointment or pick up prescriptions, etc. As you know, we have been encouraged by our national and state leaders to wear masks when we must go out. We at St. Paul's wanted to let you know that two of our church members, Carol Pope and Ruth Steele, have made face masks and would like to share them with you.
You will need to call Carol or Ruth if you would like a mask and make arrangements with them to get one. Their phone numbers are below.

Carol -- 830-377-1412
Ruth -- 830-739-7052

Thank you, Carol and Ruth, for your generosity!

Technology Corner…..

Oh looking forward to the dog days of summer! And the year is half gone already!

I hope everyone is enjoying the worship services and daily devotionals each week! I love recording Marsha, Dan,Tom and ensembles that come up. It is amazing the music they bring to us....and I get to hear it first! And on Sundays, the 4 choir members certainly make it sound like a full choir. Can you imagine how beautiful it will sound with a full choir in the santuary once the church re-opens?

If you have suggestions for music you would like to hear, send the suggestion to the office or Marsha and I am sure they will find a way to make sure it is played, either in a devotional or during the worship services.

Some tips I'd like to share with you:

1. Even if you are not watching the service until later in the day or week, please leave a comment, like (on Livestream or Facebook) or send an email to the office to let us know you watched us. It helps with counts that we report each month for attendance to the District Office.

2. Please share anything we post on Facebook that you like. This is a good form of evangalism to the local community and beyond. Also, it helps us know what you like seeing on Facebook.

3. Please let me know if anything seems broken and I will try to fix it.

I hope everyone is enjoying the lazy days of summer amidst all the craziness! Mine are not going to be so lazy with the kids going back to school!

Be Blessed,

Judy L. Phillips
